A bitter sweet end to HIGHLY under appreciated series.

I'd make a bet that half of you, or even more than half of you, will have no clue what I'm talking about when I say that the fact that they canceled Dead Like Me is a horrible travesty. Even I had no clue about the series until the last few episodes and I went back and watched all the episodes overjoyed that I had found something really great, only to find out that it pretty much ended before it ever began and I'm still steaming over the whole matter. Dead Like Me was a series on Showtime. It began and ended abruptly after only two seasons and seriously it was way too short as so much was left unanswered and the series was only getting better and better.

George, the main character, is really the typical almost "emo" type teenager (Did I actually just use EMO in a review.. someone slap me now). She's pissed off at her mom, the world, and pretty much doesn't seem to care about the world around her. That all changes when she gets hit in the head on her lunch break, I don't want to ruin the details of this for those of you that have not seen it so I apologize for being vague, and ends up of course dying and getting forced into becoming a grim reaper. Unlike what you must think, with the whole reaping issue, the series is not at all grim nor is it bleak. It's really quite funny and its really tasteful on the whole death thing. Basically the "grim reapers" are just normal people who for some reason or another got roped into the gig and its really a job. After they have filled a set number of "reaps" they get to move on, though no one knows how many that is. The problem is the series ended so fast you really just start to really get to know the characters and then they are gone. The movie Dead Like Me : Life After Death was a way to tie up the series.

The problem with a movie after series event is usually it happens way too late and in this case it certainly feels that way. Some of the original cast was unable to do the movie so your left with a new guy, and a stand in which never really goes over well with old fans. Not to mention that the new guy Cameron, replacing one of my favorite characters Rube, is downright annoying. The other problem is, its a movie, and its written so that people who did not see the series can understand whats going on. Needless to say that eats up a good portion of the film. Wait Wait, before you go thinking I hated the movie, let me say I did really love the fact that you get to see more of the story between George and her still living sister Reggie. That alone is worth every moment of the movie, just call me bitter for having to watch this in a movie vs the way it should have been done as a third season.

In the end its a good movie, and fans of the series will consider it a must watch. For those of you that were not fans I highly recommend it as its still a really unusual take on the world of grim reapers and the afterlife and hopefully it will spark your interest in the series which again I highly recommend even if it was way too short, though I promise even with it being short you won't be disappointed only a little sad that it didn't last longer.

I didn't see "Dead Like Me" for the first time until after the show had already ended. I saw the re-runs in the on-demand section of our cable package.

I absolutely fell so in love with this show and all of it's characters that David would come home more often then not and find me engrossed in watching an episode that I had already seen three or four times. He finally gave in to the darkside and bought me both season box sets for my birthday.

I'd really like to see this movie, but I'm kind of afraid it will be a major disappointment. Right now I need to go back and start watching the series again. I'm about due for a fix. And getting together with the gang at the waffle house.

Dead Like Me was one of my favorite shows. I was HEART-BROKEN when it was canceled...and it seemed like they were in the middle of the story. I really liked that this series was both dark and funny at the same time...it was incredibly unique. I didn't even realize a movie had been made! I really hope I win...I'm dying to see the movie and will have a lot of time on my hands since I lost my job yesterday in a corporate downsizing.

Thanks!

I never missed an episode and was unhappy when the show just ended without any sort of 'goodbye' episode or wrap up to the characters. Now I know why, they jumped on the trend of closing a tv series in the theater to get extra dough from the loyal fans who they knew would want to find out what happened. Noah's Arc did this too, I don't think tv shows should do this. I guess Sopranos will be coming to a theater near you sometime soon too. I would love to win so I could see how the writers close off the characters!

I watched it all, every episode, when it first came on. I think what caught me was the implied glimpse into the whole "predestined fates" thing, as well as the occasionally twisted "deaths" involved -- a falling piano, maybe, an electric exercise belt, I dunno, a toilet seat falling from orbit (that was GEORGE, BTW) -- well, WTH??
The saving graces were the family interactions, the weird inter-cuts for memories, and the occasional beautiful variations on "passing on into the light" or whatever... I reeeally want this one!
