From the first time I saw the poster in the movie theater I had mixed feelings about the release of Beverly Hills Chihuahua. You'd think I would be jumping for joy over a chihuahua movie seeing as we own six ourselves. As a dog fancier though sometimes dog movies can have a backlash on breeders and people who really care about the breed. For one the dogs shown in the movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua, though adorable, are not exactly to the standard. For those of you who are not dog show literate that means that they don't quite match up to what a Chihuahua should look like. Not to mention that anytime a dog movie gets popular so does the breeder which means up crops a bunch of people who want to make money usually at the expense of the dogs.
Now I'll totally get off my soapbox as all of this really makes no difference when it comes to the movie itself. Beverly Hills Chihuahua is adorable and Connor is totally in love. As far as he is concerned his favorite friends have somehow gotten themselves into the TV and he won't take his eyes off of them. Beverly Hills Chihuahua's storyline reminds me a bit of home alone gone to the dogs. Chole, the main character, is a very spoiled very posh little chihuahua from Beverly hills (Melos is wondering about right now where his diamond collar is...) who just happens to make her way into Mexico with her pet sitter and ends up getting dog napped and is destined to become bait in a dog fight. Thankfully for her she makes friends fast and ends up getting rescued by an ex police dog. In the end its a big race for her dog sitter to find her, for Chloe to find her missing collar, and for everyone to get back home safe and sound before Chloe's human mom notices anything has gone wrong at all. It's really a cute story not to mention the fact that all of the main actors are dogs, which is Connor's favorite aspect.
Did I mention that Connor said "dog" before "mama" as well as "Bella" before "mama", Bella is my mom's chihuahua. Bleh.
We saw Beverly Hills Chihuahua on bluray and there are some really cool extra features. The first is Pet Pals which shows you more behind the scenes action including a look at the voice actors, including Drew Berrymore who was the voice for Chloe. Cool behind the scenes looks at the dogs who stared in the movie and of course a bunch of deleted scenes.
Our favorite extra though was the Legend of the Chihuahua, a animated short which shows the mythical version of origins of the Chihuahua breed. You know Chihuahuas are destined to rule the world right? Actually the real origin of the breed revolves around the Aztecs and Chihuahuas were not only companions, but could lead the dead into the underworld. They were pretty important in Aztec culture so Chihuahuas have some room to brag, not to mention that they are the only breed of dog that originated in North America!

We have to dogs (beagles) and two cats so we are definitely animal lovers. I'm wondering if I could only have one animal if a chihauhau might be a good compremise--a dog yet it could easily sit in your lap and be held and cuddled. I vote for adorable.

I have mixed feelings about this...when I was little, my grandma had one named Fritz. He was the sweetest baby and was wonderful with me(from my birth til I was about 7). BUT...my great aunt had one named PeeWee and he was the most annoying, barking, biting, hateful dog you have ever seen. It depends on the dogs temperment and the owners too!

I think that it depends on the dog. My friend had a little fellow that never ever ever ever stopped barking or running around. For a little fellow, he was very territorial.

I always wanted a chihuahua as a kid. Recently I lived across the hall from a miniature one and she was a sweetie.
I've known a couple chihuahuas that were sweet but they are a bit too small and fragile for me to ever want to own one.
This looks like a very cute movie, that I am sure my grandchildren will enjoy. As far as Chihuahua's go they are yippy little rugrats!
