Ghost Town was a delightful suprise.

I keep saying over and over that December was the month of surprises when it came to movies. I absolutely love doing my movie reviews and some months are admittedly more exciting than others. I was so busy last month with holiday reviews I have to say I did not pay attention to the previews of the movies I was doing towards the last part of December so when I went to put each movie in at night to watch them the movie's themselves were a total surprise.

Ghost Town not only surprised me but surprised me in one of the best ways. The title as well as the cover was not terribly exciting. Not that I've ever said that looking at a cover really gives you any idea about the movie itself, but even the first few minutes of the movie did not terribly impress me. The main character is sort of this snobbish stuck up dentist the kind of person who thinks having Dr. in the front of your name makes you special in some way. I'm sorry but last I looked doctors are as human as the rest of us and as long as the degree I'm working on is taking me I swear I could have been one myself. heh. However needless to say Ghost Town did not win me over at first. However, shortly into the movie the main character gets a pretty routine procedure and needless to say he doesn't wake up exactly the same as he went under.

Ghost Town is in the end a story in humanity. A reminder that no matter who we are or where we think we are in the end we are all the same, with the same needs, and sometimes it really is beneficial to everyone as a whole that we look up from our lives, our troubles, what we think we have and look around. Bertram the dentist in question finds himself in sort of a situation. He sees dead people and, to his dismay, they want him to help them. Each ghost is different but they all need help completing a task before they can pass over. Something that was left undone something important to them even if it is as simple as just helping their son find their favorite stuffed animal.

Bertram may not be the most willing helper at first but through meeting what ends up being the love of his life and helping her late husband he learns that not everything is about him. It's not only a great story but a great reminder that sometimes that giving a bit of yourself gives you the greatest rewards. You see Bertram is a dentist, a miserable single dentist who purely wants to be a dentist as its the one profession where its difficult for people to talk to you. When Bertram starts to see dead people he can't run away from them, hide, or shut them up as well ghosts can walk through walls you know. Not to mention he is the most unlikely person to help a poor ghost as he can barely stand to listen to his patients as it is. When Bertram meets Frank who recently died leaving his wife behind, Frank is very insistent on getting help and Bertram is very uninterested.

Needless to say
Bertram does finally agree to help Frank even though its partly out of being badgered. When he meets Frank's widow however he finds himself falling in love. Ironic eh? Bertram's whole ideas on life begin to change until he has a accident of his own. I really don't want to give away more but its really a great watch.

If your lucky enough to be able to see it in bluray you will find a stunningly gorgeous picture and the details of the ghost effects are really quite cool. The ghosts appear to look like everyone else to
Bertram however there are instances where they walk through walls or into cars where you see them appear and disappear. Its not all that noticeable in the standard format but you do notice much more of the "vaporizing" in the bluray. I can't say that the bluray extras are all that amazing though there is a special that shows some of the special effects and a commentary track which is pretty fun to watch. However, the color and sound difference between the bluray and standard edition is really quite a difference.

Ghost Town is available right now on DVD and you can pick up your own copy on Amazon!

I have three copies of
