You dirty dog!

As far as I am concerned what is better than a whole DVD full of classic read along dog stories? You'd think my poor child would have had enough of dogs, especially seeing as his playmates for most of the time have four legs verses two. Even so his favorite game lately has been playing "dog" which is almost embarrassing as he even eats his cereal like a dog.. I'm starting to think I may be raising a wolf instead of a child. heh. Ahh well at least I know he will grow up with a respect of animals.

Scholastic's new storybook treasures introduced Harry the Dirty Dog and more playful puppy stories. This great new read along dvd includes the four orginal stories from the collection as well as two new bonus stories! All in all the dvd includes the classic books : Harry The Dirty Dog, Officer Buckle and Gloria, No Roses for Harry, Dot the Fire Dog, I Want a Dog, and Angus Lost.

Harry the Dirty Dog was always a childhood favorite of mine, Harry the dog hates bath time, so much so that he actually runs away to avoid getting a bath. The only problem is that in the process he gets so filthy and so muddy that his once mostly white coat is almost all black and he doesn't look at all like himself. He is so frightened that his family may not recognize him that he finally takes that awful bath and ends up learning that maybe baths are not so bad after all.

Harry the Dirty Dog is a classic story, an easy first book for children to read, and I think it was orginally suposed to help those kids who hated bath time. Luckly that is not an issue here as Connor would perfer to take a bath over almost anything, even eating dinner.

The book that I was most excited to see in the collection was Officer Buckle and Gloria, Connor's dad is in the last few weeks of the police academy and I'm always looking for ways to try to introduce Connor to the idea of his father's job and the long or off schedules he may have to work in the coming years. I want him to be proud of him and realize just what his dad has to sacrafice to make sure that we are all safe. Officer Buckle is not exactly a crime fighting super hero.. heh but its is a good introduction. Officer Buckle is actually a safty officer and goes from school to school teaching children that they should buckle up. The new police dog all the while is demostrating "buckling up" while Officer Buckle speaks behind his back. Officer Buckle is not as amused as the children are and ends up getting upset and quits the program. Turns out so many children are upset that Officer Buckle has a change of heart. It's a fun story and a great way to teach children that it may not be so uncool to wear a seat belt.
