I've been waiting for months to see Spiderwick

Spiderwick Chronicles was one of the movies that I desperately wanted to see in theaters but due to the fact that I had a human leech (aka Connor.. heh) at the time it was in theaters I never ended up seeing it. So I've been counting the days till Spiderwick Chronicles came out on DVD.

I was bit concerned that by the time I got my copy that I had been overly excited and I may be disappointed by the time I actually got to see the movie. I ended up taking it down with me to flordia on a visit to my parents and sat down and watched it with my dad. Needless to say I regret even more now that I didn't get to see it on the big screen.

The animations of all the "creatures" in the movie was fabulous, I was hooked from the moment I saw the first house brownie. And though the storyline at times seemed to be missing the debt I would have like to have seen the movie itself is based on a illustrated fairly short kids book. I would have liked to have seen more background information on some of the characters but hopefully you will see more of this in possible sequels. Otherwise its fabulous and children will be captivated by all the fantasy creatures in the movie. I only wish I had my own house brownie.. maybe thats where all those missing sock of Connor's is going?

The Spiderwick Chronicles is due to be released on June 24th, if your thinking about buying it this would be one time I HIGHLY recommend you go with the collector's 2 disc edition. The special features are well worth the extra money if your interested in seeing more of the animated characters. Actually the field guide feature is a great way to get more information about all the mythical creatures in the movie, personally I can't get enough of that sort of thing so I almost enjoyed the special features on this movie as much as the movie itself. Which believe me thats a rare thing for me to say.

Now I just need to find myself a Hobgoblin and convince him to spit in my eyes.

One small word of warning.. if your child is especially fond of birds you may want to cover their eyes towards the end of the movie when Mulgarath turns into the Crow. Trust me.

A little more info on the movie :

HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. – From the beloved, best-selling series of books comes the extraordinary fantasy adventure, HE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES, debuting as a two-disc Special Collector’s Edition DVD and Blu-ray on June 24, 2008. Bringing to life the fantastical, unseen world that exists all around us, THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES is “an action-packed theme park ride” (Los Angeles Times) that is both “scary and wondrous” (Time). From the moment the Grace family moves into a secluded old house, peculiar things start to happen. Unable to explain the accidents and strange disappearances, the Grace children—Jared, Simon and Mallory—start to investigate and find the unbelievable truth of the Spiderwick Estate and the amazing creatures that inhabit it. Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls), the film features an all-star cast including Freddie Highmore (Charlie And The Chocolate Factory), Mary Louise Parker (“Weeds”), Sarah Bolger (In America) David Strathairn (Good Night, And Good Luck), Nick Nolte (Tropic Thunder) and the voices of Seth Rogen (Superbad) and Martin Short (Jiminy Glick In Lalawood).

All-time favorite mythical character is Grendel's mother, from Beowulf, probably because I identify with her. Having "Spiderwick" on hand for her to view would make me seem less of a monster to my granddaughter!
