The Narnia saga continues!

I have been waiting with baited breath for the DVD release of The Chronicles of Narnia : Prince Caspian since it was out in theaters. Narnia was one of my favorite childhood retreats, I had the entire series, all seven books, and would sit down in a weekend and read the entire series front to back.

For those of you that are not familiar with the book series Prince Caspian is actually the fourth book from the series but the series but the series was never exactly in order as it skips around a bit but storyline wise its actually I believe the third book in order of the time line, don't quote me on this its been awhile since I've actually read the series front to back but I always remember it being a little off in the way the books are numbered. Prince Caspian was always my least favorite book in the series for several reasons but the biggest reason is the fact that Aslan is for the most part absent for most of the book and movie as well as this movie focuses more on the Humans who live in Narnia than the magical creatures as it picks up hundreds of years after the children have left Narnia (its only been a year in Earth time) and the humans of Narnia, the Telmarines, have been executing the mystical creatures of Narnia for generations and even the trees have totally gone to sleep. It was all a bit too depressing for me as a child and I did always slightly dread it when I got to that particular book in the series. However, with that said its one of the most important books as it really sets the stage for the rest of the novels and its one of the most history rich books in the series as it really gives you some good insight into what makes both Aslan and the rest of Narnia work.

I watched The Chronicles of Narnia : Prince Caspian on blu ray and wow... wow.. the film is so crisp that I could actually see the beams of light peeking through the trees at the beginning of the film when the children are taking a boat up the river in search of Aslan. Every aspect of the film is so well done that you will swear you are there. Even the CGI is breath taking and the scene where the water entity takes out the bridge is impressive to say the least. That alone would be enough to get me but for every detail you can see you can hear as well as the soundtrack for Chronicles of Narnia : Prince Caspian on blu ray is amazing. The music is stand alone fabulous and even if you are not a Narnia fan I would highly recommend the soundtrack by itself but the sound effects are really great as well! This is exactly the sort of thing I expected when I spent $300 to buy a blu ray player and its exactly the movie that makes me glad a thousand times over I did.

The storyline of Prince Caspian may leave a few of you disappointed if your expecting a heartwarming story about Aslan and a happy ending. Prince Caspian is story is ruthless as far as Narnia goes.. its a struggle from the beginning as Prince Caspian's father is dead and he is the crown prince in waiting for his thrown with his insane uncle watching over the throne in the meantime while he has time to grow up. Sadly in the meantime his uncle has other ideas and when his own son is born he plots to kill Prince Caspian so his own son would become the crown prince and heir to the thrown. That is how the movie opens and it pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the movie. Death, the constant struggle between right and wrong, anger over the absence of his father, with a slight undertone of a love story all mixed in one. I really don't want to give away the whole story as if your a fan of Narnia I think its really important that you see Prince Caspian as its a building block for the rest of the story but I will say that the ending always gets me both in the book and the movie as it seems so terribly unfair. Though I guess growing up is never fair and that was the point all along. It really sounds like I didn't like Prince Caspian and its just not true, its just one of those stories that's hard to swallow at times but leaves you cheering for the accomplishments of the characters. Thus far its by far the prettiest and most impressive looking Narnia film yet and obviously a real love for the series shows through in every detail.

This movie is definitely on our "to rent" or "to buy" list. My husband and I are both fans of C.S. Lewis and we enjoyed the first Narnia movie so I bet we'll like this one too.

My favorite book in the series? Hmmm...That's a tough one. I really like The Magician's Nephew.

I have loved the whole Chronicles of Narnia series since I was abot 10, and have read it numerous times, can't be beat. MY favorite character is of course Aslan.

I cannot narrow it down to one favorite book, let alone one favorite character! C.S.Lewis said that Reeepicheep and Puddleglum were his personal favorites. All I can say is that Edmund, Trumpkin (my favorite from "Prince Caspian" because of his sterling worth and crotchety exterior), Bree, Aravis, Uncle Andrew and Polly rank way up there, too.

As for the books, they are each deeply moving to me. "The Magician's Nephew" makes me laugh the most; "The Last Battle" makes me tear up every single time I read it. One of the most amazing experiences of my life was reading the entire series aloud to my little brother. Now I'm looking forward to the day I can start with my daughter.

The first gift I gave to my husband (when we were still dating) was a copy of Prince Caspian:) I knew he loved the Science Fiction genre and I loved the high school Lion,Witch and the Wardrobe play:)

ANyway, we read Prince Caspian together during our 1st year of marriage;) Ans we saw the Lion,Witch and the Wardrobe in the theater... didn't get a chance to see Prince Caspian!!

This would be a FUN gift for my hubby especially since he usually gets slighted from gifts since his b-day is soo close to Christmas:)

I've read all of the books and seen both of the new Narnia movies! It's so hard to choose a favorite book or character though! I think one of my favorite books of the Narnia series was The Voyage of the Dawn Treader because they visited so many different places in that book.

Fangirl Jen said...

I actually like the first (chronologically) book "The Magician's Nephew". I like the story of the beginning of Narnia and the origin of the White Witch. I think the Witch is actually my favorite character, because like the children, she was not from Narnia.

Yes, I have read the entire series.

The one character that I can't ever get out of my head is Susan. Yes, she comes to reject Narnia as she grows into a silly, self-absorbed young woman, but the story ends with her losing her entire family in a train crash. Even as a young child, it seemed incredibly cruel to me that such a loss was the price one paid for conceit. And ultimately, which makes for the better story; the eternally good who gain their just rewards, or the fallen girl who must re-evaluate her life and values in the aftermath of extraordinary tragedy?
I've often thought of Susan, all alone in a world without magic. I hope she found her way back.

In contrast to The Golden Compass, and the others from that series, I've learned that these stories are pro-christian and do not degrade the faith. I'm really looking forward to watching this with my son, and would love to have the sequel!

I liked The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. When I was little (when I read this book for the first time) I had a wardrobe in my room and, for some reason, this really made that book come alive for me. I would DREAM about my own wardrobe opening up to a huge magical land such as Narnia. That has stayed with me. I love the idea of secret passages and entryways and magical places.
