Have I mentioned how much I love dragons?

There were two things I wanted when I grew up.. a green pony who I had planned to name Fred, and a dragon, any color would have done nicely.

Well I never did get either, and I'm still waiting on that green pony I was promised, but I guess the dragon part wasn't exactly doable. eh. Either way I obviously have been dying to see Jane and the Dragon!

Right from the beginning I really identified with Jane. Jane lives in a kingdom where girls are expected to be .. well girlish.. and grow up to be ladies-in-waiting. I grew up especially tomboyish and my grandmother never did let me live it down and constantly reminded me about how I should be wearing dresses and playing with Barbie not romping around the back yard chasing toads with no shoes on. Jane wants nothing to do with the whole "lady-in-waiting" business, and all she wants is to be a knight's apprentice. Lucky for Jane she just happens to be pretty tough for a girl and ends up rescuing the pretty wussy Prince Cuthbert from a dragon.

Jane and the Dragon has one of the most unique "looks" I have seen in a kids cartoon in some time. The entire show is done with computer animations which honestly usually is not a big plus for me. I am typically a cartoon snob and I honestly prefer classic drawn animations over computer ones but Jane and the Dragon breaks all the rules for me. The animation is fantastic, super detailed down to every little hair on Jane's head, but the best part is that it does not sacrifice the whimsy of cartoon animation as the background looks hand drawn, and the characters still keep the look of being drawn just with a lot more detail. I guess I shouldn't be so surprised as Jane is animated by Peter Jackson's animation team, the same great people that brought you the computer animations for Lord of the Rings.

Jane and the Dragon - A Dragon's Tale is out on DVD now and includes the first five episodes of the series. You better bet I am anxiously waiting the second dvd already! You can also check out more about Jane on her website!

You can pick up your copy from Amazon!

I have two copies of Jane and the Dragon - A Dragon's Tale to give away to my readers!!

I have never seen this but looks great as far as the computer animation and details, and the fact a girl does not always have to be buttons and bows and can have dirty feet.

What is most exciting to me about this? I guess just how you described it. It sounds like a beautifully done cartoon and I love the idea of a girl that isn't all about dressing up and such (i was that way for awhile..though not quite a tomboy) and I think it would be fun to give this to my cousin or someone to enjoy as well.

The idea that in this classic culture of the middle ages, that a girl can be who she wants to be...a knight apprentice. It helps ALL girls know that they can be who they want to be and not a lady in waiting like her mom.

Actually, the computer animation is one of my favorite things! (I'm married to a nerd who fell in love with Veggie Tales because of the computer animation!)

I had never heard of this, so I watched the clip on Amazon, and it looks fantastic! I love how the characters have British accents, which my kids seem to really respond to. I don't know why this is--my kids love Angelina Ballerina for the same reason---maybe this is a kids' version of a "foreign" film...
