I'm sure you've heard the story, the one with the stockings all hung by the chimney with care? I know I've read The Night Before Christmas so many times at this point I think I can rehearse it by memory alone. The Night Before Christmas is one of my favorite children's Christmas stories. Read aloud in this Scholastic Treasures dvd each page is animated and its quite nice to see one of my favorite stories brought to life before my eyes.
What really surprised me about this dvd is the six other stories included. Sure I've heard The Night Before Christmas and The Little Drummer Boy but the other four stories were all new to me at least. The most unexpected part is that three of the other stories stray a little from Christmas and carry a multicultural flare including Seven Candles for Kwanzaa, In the Month of Kislev, and Too Many Tamales!
It was really kinda neat seeing Christmas stories, I've always celebrated a traditional Christmas my entire life, tree, presents, stockings, Santa.. the classic Christmas story. Growing up however I did wonder often how the holidays were spent and what exactly Hanukkah and Kwanzaa were all about. Still even as an adult I am pretty ignorant to traditions surrounding both not because I don't want to know. The second and third stories on the dvd Seven Candles for Kwanzaa and In the Month of Kislev may help answer some of those same questions for Connor, as both stories focus on just that question.. what exactly does Kwanzaa and Hanukkah represent?
Too Many Tamales is a Christmas story but it set in a spanish speaking household and can be see on the dvd in english or in spanish if you choose. I cannot even imagine having Tamales for my Christmas dinner but it does sound awfully yummy!

IF we're talking favorite from those featured on this dvd I'd go with the Little Drummer Boy. If we doing just a regular "favorite Christmas story" I'd go with the story of the first Christmas. I love a lot of the more modern ideas that people associate with Christmas (ie Rudolph, Santa, Frosty, presents, etc), but I love it in moderation when the true meaning of the season is kept close to heart.

ReplyDeleteI love How the Grich Stole Christmas. I'm really interested in Too Many Tamales. I thought it sounded odd to have tamales for Christmas dinner, but that is what my fiance's family does. Everybody spends all day making tameles on Christmas eve. Not only do they make beef and chicken tamales, but they also make some with a fruity filling (like pineapple) with a sweet outside.
